New TMMSN UTV takes maiden voyage into washed out territory.

The TMMSN has purchased a 4x4 MULE and is now using it to survey and
conduct sampling procedures on the beach front washed out by
Hurricane Ike in High Island, Sabine Pass, Matagorda areas. Funding for the
new machine was provided by a Prescott grant. Not only is this
a more economical way of performing our work on the beach, but it
saves the Galveston trucks from salty wear and tear.

Dear Supporters,
It’s that time of year again! That’s right….it’s time to link your Kroger card to the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network
so that every single time you shop at Kroger a portion of your sales will go towards our mission. We earned nearly $2,000 last year,
so let’s try to beat our record this year!

The TMMSN recovered 16 more dead dolphins from the Galveston area
since the last update. Analysis are in process for toxicology on
blubber samples taken recently. These tests are very expensive--about
$1500 per sample tested--but thanks to
Bluevoice.org, a
non-profit conservation group underwriting these tests, we hope to
learn a little more about what may be affecting the local bottlenose
dolphin population--and ultimately the human population, as we are
the top of the food chain. Per our protocol, our dead animal staff and volunteers
remain quarantined from our live animal in rehabilitation, Toby.
