TMMSN Spring 2010 Events

TMMSN volunteers have been busy not only with animal rehabilitation, recovery, necropsies and maintenance work but with working booths and giving presentations at various events across the state.

Here is a list of just a few things TMMSN volunteers have worked on this Spring:

February - The TMMSN Galveston region held a volunteer training and welcomed 3 dozen new volunteers.

-Participated in a marine biology symposium at Texas A&M Galveston

March - The successful rehabilitation and transport of Bottlenose dolphin "Donley" to Sea World of San Antonio

-The rescue and attempted rehabilitation and following necropsy of GA1612

-The Fay School children raised $1000 for the TMMSN

-Traveled to Lamar University in Beaumont to give an extended presentation about the mission of the TMMSN.

-The TMMSN set up a booth at the Texas City Trash Bash Set up a booth and brought the mascot out to Galveston Evia Spring Market.

-The placement of special signage across the state at popular boat ramps and marinas for public awareness (a TMMSN/NOAA/TPWD joint effort)

-INTENSIVE recovery of dead stranded animals and respective necropsies, sampling, surveys, etc.

-Broke ground on the new Marine Mammal Rehabilitation building in Galveston, TX (TMMSN/NOAA)

April - The TMMSN competed with other local environmental groups for the best booth at the Houston Zoo.

-Added a second layer of roof to the temporary Aquacell roof in Galveston

-Rescued and attempted rehabilitation of one Spinner dolphin and one Bottlenose neonate

 -Making preparations for any necessary action needed for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response

-Additional dead stranded animal recovery, necropsies, sampling, surveys
