MOBY aka "Baby Mo"

Dear TMMSN Volunteers and Members,
We have some very sad news today….Moby passed away this morning around 10:30am. He has been hanging in there over the past few days but he has also been in critical condition. He has been through some very traumatic things including his stranding as well as the loss of his mother.
This morning around 9am he was not able to support himself in the water any longer so I began supporting him in the tank. After supporting him for about an hour and a half, he passed away quietly in my arms. We approached this rehab knowing that Kogia calves are a pelagic and unusual species and have never survived in rehab or captive situations.
However, TMMSN Staff, Volunteers and the caring public tried everything possible to give him a chance for survival. The response from the volunteers and the public wanting to help with Moby’s rehab was amazing and it is heartwarming to know that there are so many people out there that truly care for these animals and are willing to go the extra mile to give them a second chance.
Although we were
not successful with this rehabilitation, we feel we have learned a
lot about the species and perhaps some of this knowledge will help
in the future. Once again,
all of you have been amazing and we can’t thank you enough for your
caring attitudes, willingness to help and your support!

August 21, 2007 Update
Moby is still considered in critical condition today. Shortly
after his mother passed away on Saturday, he began accepting tube
feedings very well which consisted of a milk formula derived from
the analysis of previously stranded Dwarf and Pygmy Sperm Whale Mothers.
However, he soon began experiencing some gastric issues which is not uncommon for
this species of calves to experience in rehab since we cannot completely match
the previous diet. Adjustments are being made so that we can keep him comfortable.
We will be updating you regularly with his condition.
TMMSN has had some wonderful assistance from very caring people who want to try
to help Moby and we want you to know that we truly appreciate you. If you would like
to help you can visit our support page and make a donation or check out our
wish list
for items needed.
Thank you!
August 18, 2007 Update - Moby's Mother Passes
This morning, around 5:30 AM, our rescued Dwarf Sperm Whale mother died. The necropsy will be performed today and the results of the necropsy are forthcoming. We are saddened by this turn of events but we must press on for the sake of the baby.
On the positive side of the situation, our little Dwarf Sperm Whale calf--which we have affectionately named "Moby," or "Mo" for short--is finally allowing us to nurse him through a tube, and eagerly looks forward to each feeding! Check out pictures of the baby Dwarf Sperm Whale feedings!
Remember to check our website often for hourly and daily updates on the progress of our Baby Moby.
When a live animal is in rehabilitation, TMMSN needs help from their trained volunteers to man shifts at the Aqua-Cell. We also need supporters to spread the word about the need for support in the way of financial donations to support the rehabilitation. TMMSN volunteers really came through with Moby and your support is so appreciated!
At up to $400 dollars a day, these rehabilitations are expensive and we need your help! Please visit the TMMSN Gift Shop to make a cash donation. And don't forget to become a member or renew your annual membership.
