August 18, 2007 Update - Moby's Mother Passes
This morning, around 5:30 AM, our rescued Dwarf Sperm Whale mother died. The necropsy will be performed today and the results of the necropsy are forthcoming. We are saddened by this turn of events but we must press on for the sake of the baby.
When a live animal is in rehabilitation, TMMSN needs help from their trained volunteers to man shifts at the Aqua-Cell. We also need supporters to spread the word about the need for support in the way of financial donations to support the rehabilitation. TMMSN volunteers really pulled through to help out with this Kogia sima.
At up to $400 dollars a day, these rehabilitations are expensive and we need your help! Please visit the TMMSN Gift Shop to make a cash donation. And don't forget to become a member or renew your annual membership.
TMMSN Rescues Mother and Calf Dwarf Sperm Whales
TMMSN received a call at 9AM August 16, 2007 about a stranding close to Jamaica Beach. Braving the strong wind and rain of Tropical Storm Erin, the TMMSN Critical Care Team (CCT) arrived on the beach where the stranding was reported and found not one stranded whale, but two--mother and calf! Specifically, the mother and calf are identified as Dwarf Sperm Whales (Kogia sima).
Using the professional rescue techniques learned through 27 years of marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation, TMMSN volunteers transported both mother and calf to their Aqua Cell rehabilitation facility and both mother and calf are currently receiving care and attention from the TMMSN CCT.
TMMSN currently needs help from their trained volunteers to man shifts at the Aqua-Cell. We also need supporters to spread the word about the need for support in the way of financial donations to support the rehabilitation of our new mother and calf.
At $400 dollars a day, these rehabilitations are expensive and we need your help! Please visit the TMMSN Gift Shop to make a cash donation. And don't forget to become a member or renew your annual membership.
Below are more rescue and rehabilitation photos. We will keep everyone updated with the latest information as soon as our web person can update it!
