Immediate Needs of the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network

The Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network has lost thousands of dollars in rehabilitation and research equipment due to wind and water damage of Hurricane Ike.  Many have been so kind in their offer to assist TMMSN in our recovery.  We would like to request funds to purchase the lost equipment directly related to dolphin recovery and rehabilitation so that our operations can continue.  Below is a list of items that were damaged or destroyed as a result of Hurricane Ike that we have an urgent need for:

Image Vet Portable X-Ray Machine $8,200

DC-6 Vet Diag. Ultrasound System $18,995

The capability to perform diagnostics on-site for marine mammal rehabilitation is necessary.  Dolphins and Whales stress easily and having the systems readily available at our facility will improve rehabilitation efforts.

I-Stat Portable Clinical Blood Analyzer- $5,000--NOV '08 - FUNDING COMPLETELY DONATED BY THE SHIRLEY FAMILY FOUNDATION - THANK YOU!

    Sofpool 17x32 ft. 16,000 gallon $7,500

The Sofpool will be used for dolphin and small whale rehabilitation.  It is the easiest and quickest pool to install with the most sturdy construction and long-lasting vinyl fabric.  The depth is perfect for the handlers to work in the pool with the mammals, and it can be repeatedly filled with water, drained and refilled during marine mammal rehab exercises and medical testing.

    Stainless Steel Professional Freezer $5,000

The freezer will be used to store fish used for live animal rehabilitation.

Pump System and Heat Exchanger- $10,000

The pump/filtration system is necessary to maintain water quality for marine mammals in rehabilitation.  Temperature control for the water with the use of a heat exchange system is also vital for critically ill patients.

Commercial Chest Freezer 19.7 Cu Ft.- Need 1

Cost: $698.00

These chest freezers would be used for storage of samples collected from deceased marine mammals for research purposes.

4X4 ATV IN GOOD WORKING ORDER - The ATV will be used for surveys and dolphin recoveries in coastal areas that have been washed out by Hurricane Ike such as Bolivar Peninsula and the Sabine Pass area.
